Greg and Damien met while studying Physiology at Brunel University. After University Greg grew up (sort of) and became a teacher, as well as strutting his stuff on the catwalk around the world. Damien also grew up (not quite to the height of most basketball stars) and represented Ireland, before continuing his international Basketball career in coaching.
Frustrated with friends and family tucking into so-called “healthy” snacks, the guys dreamt up the idea of making a high protein, sugar free ice cream. With a few clicks on eBay, they were the proud owners of a second hand ice cream machine. Long nights, suspicious deliveries of bags of white powder and a flat coated in mix later, they finally did it…Wheyhey!
Now it was time for a name, Cool Whey or Wheyhey!?…we think they chose well! Greg and Damien spent their days (and evenings) watching countless YouTube tutorials to conceptualise the Wheyhey brand and bring to life their very first tub.
It was time to take this kitchen concoction and turn it into a reality. The tiny ice cream machine was no match for the growing demand of Wheyhey, and has since been displayed proudly in the office as a constant reminder of how it all started. Greg and Damien then ventured all over Europe to find a manufacturer. After countless trips, they finally found the perfect match. Wheyhey was fast becoming a reality!
They hit the streets with their trusty ‘portable’ freezer, where the back straining work soon paid off and it wasn’t long until they had their first ever retailer; Sheen Sports. Shortly after, As Nature Intended followed and then the big’un; leading high street health store, Holland and Barrett.
Drum roll please… we welcomed the British Supermodel, David Gandy to our family. David loved Wheyhey so much he decided to invest. This epic news was shortly followed by a request from the ultimate entrepreneur, Sir Richard Branson who had requested Wheyhey to be sent to Necker Island! It took a lot of hard work, a plane, a boat and a car or two…but we got it there!
Next up a van was needed for the growing demand of independent stores and days later, they were the proud owners of an old freezer van (old being the key word). It wasn’t long until it was named “Blu-Tac”… need we say more! There have been so many “Blu-Tac” moments that it had to feature on our latest ice cream tub design! If you ever have time for a good story, be sure to ask us, we have plenty of good ones! In the midst of several “Blu-Tac” breakdowns, we had another type of breakdown! Our rented freezer with ALL Holland and Barrett’s first ever Wheyhey order inside broke down, leaving us with a protein enriched river to contend with. At this moment there was only one solution… to the pub we went and drowned our sorrows.
Enabling and supporting living well is a core value at Wheyhey, so what better way to establish that than supply the NHS at the Royal Free Hospital! Wheyhey was given out to recovery patients who required high protein diets. This is understandably one of our proudest moments to date! We also partnered with leading men’s health charity, Movember - they donned crumb catchers, a Wheyhey tub was sent into space and we launched a bespoke new flavour to help raise awareness.
Wheyhey was getting noticed! The guys were inundated with press requests and featured in the Times, The Guardian and The Mail, just to name a few. We were awarded the Great British Start-Up of the year, recognized as a ‘Trailblazer brand’ by Food Vision and Unilever foundry, and to top it off we won a place on the highly competitive Thrive accelerator programme based in California, for emerging food tech businesses backed by Forbes and other large foodtech companies.
Time to grow! Let’s be honest, the UK doesn’t have the best weather for ice cream and we often see all four seasons in one day, so we came up with a solution. Wheyhey is now available in major retailers in Ireland (probably worse weather), Germany, Austria, Scandinavia and the Middle East. We even sell ice cream to Iceland!
Big moment…We secured a major listing with Tesco, initially rolling out online. The result? A huge success! Now you can find Wheyhey instore and on the shelves of over 750 Tesco stores with this number continuing to grow.
Our goal is to change what it means for consumers to eat truly healthy, great tasting food. The future for Wheyhey is looking outrageously bright!
